Petrochemical Service Overview

In a petrochemical facility, ZymeFlow Decon is most applicable in olefin and aromatics process units. ZymeFlow Decon has a wide range of experience including but not limited to ethylene, propylene, styrene, benzene, cumene, toluene, xylene, and phenol. ZymeFlow Decon can also be used in some chemical facilities, depending on the feed stock source. Petrochemical units that ZymeFlow Decon has the most experience in includes quench tower, strippers, separators, py-gas, compressors, caustic system, amine system, and fractionators.


The Exclusive ZymeFlow Vapour-Phase® Process


The ZymeFlow Process is the most utilized for hydrocarbon process unit decontamination and includes a proprietary blended chemistry, Zyme-Flow® UN657, applied in our Vapour-Phase application method. The Process works by effectively penetrating all sludge, scale, and metals to target harmful contaminants. Saving time and expense, it simultaneously frees contaminants to the relief system while oxidizing any hydrogen sulfide or pyrophoric iron sulfide. The ZymeFlow Process results in the fastest possible vessel entry. Process equipment will be de-oiled and will result in zero benzene, zero explosive gases (LEL), zero hydrogen sulfide, and neutralized pyrophorics after 8-12 hours.


The Vapour-Phase application injects proprietary chemistry directly into the steam line which travels throughout the designated equipment system. The unique, water based chemistry is not pushed or propelled through the system by steam but becomes part of the steam. This important detail allows ZymeFlow to have very few injection points and does not require elaborate hoses, piping, or complicated setup. If steam is not an option, alternative application methods can be utilized.


Turnaround Planning


ZymeFlow Decon Technology attributes much of our success and zero recordable injuries to excellent turnaround planning. Experienced decontamination planners work with plant personnel to ensure tasks are managed and consistent with customer design limits and specifications while staying on schedule.


To aid in the safe and fast execution of the shutdown, customized decontamination procedures, drawings, and timelines are provided to ensure the decontamination portion of the shutdown is carried out as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Our on-staff CAD technicians work closely with ZymeFlow decontamination planners to provide user-friendly conveyances of each plant's P&IDs. The easy to read CAD illustrations are powerful tools that integrate into ZymeFlow procedures to ensure operations personnel can easily track and understand the decontamination status.


A procedural manual is created for each planning job. Depending on the scope of the project, the manual may contain guidlines, product information, and a step-by-step guide along with a process hazard analysis to help eliminate potential releases or incidents.


Monitoring and Testing


To ensure the success of the project, ZymeFlow technicians are onsite monitoring the progress of the decontamination. Not only are contaminants recorded throughout the scope of the work, but ZymeFlow specialist are also able to track the concentration of chemistry to help determine the level of contaminants inside the system. Based on analyzing tests throughout the project, on-site changes such as shortened treatment time, chemistry concentration, steam pressure, and other adjustments can be implemented for maximum results. The team provides operations with a post job report including the test results throughout the scope of the project.


Effluent and Disposal


ZymeFlow Decon chemistries have minimal impact on wastewater and the environment. The chemistry itself is biodegradable, wastewater friendly, and is non-exothermic. Zyme-Flow chemistry expends itself when reacting with contaminants minimizing the amount of chemistry sent to waste water. Furthermore, Zyme-Flow has a self-breaking emulsion so when agitation is stopped, the oil and chemistry separate from the water without the need for additional emulsion breakers. There is no circulation required on most units when using the ZymeFlow Vapour-Phase Process therefore the only effluent is steam condensate. If required, ZymeFlow Decon uses strategic partners to provide additional services in association with turnaround decontamination such as piping, header systems, and effluent planning.


Additional Chemistries and Applications


There is a variety of units and situations that the Vapour-Phase Process cannot be utilized. In Petrochemical facilities many units have linings that are sensitive to temperature therefore Vapour-Phase is not permitted. The ZymeFlow family of chemistries contain additional products that can work at ambient temperatures through circulation or soaking methods.


Additional chemistries which break down polymer, waxes, paraffin, and asphaltenes are also available.  The team at ZymeFlow Decon uses these specialty chemicals to treat ethylene fractionators and oil-water separators which contain large quantities of coke bound together by these heavy components. The specialty chemistries break down the binders leaving loose coke, which can generally be washed or swept out, rather than being chipped or hydro-blasted. These additional chemistries and applications are very successful in the petrochemical environment. Details are discussed with the customer’s operations team to determine the best method for the fastest and safest entry for both personnel and the equipment.
